2010 Native American Heritage Festival

On Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, Garfield Park hosted a festival it called Native American Heritage Day. This was the park’s second hosting of the heritage days.

Activities included dance and drum circles and vendors displaying and selling items crafted by ethnic Native Americans. A frame from one of the drum circles leads off this section below. Below it is one of the craft items that caught my attention.

The most riveting activity of the afternoon was the circle dance, which began with an explanation and instruction to attendees interested in participating. That was followed by a demonstration … which in turn was followed by participation.

I could find no evidence that there were any other Native American Heritage Day observances in the park in subsequent years. I did find, however, smaller-scale observances in more recent years at the city's Eiteljorg Museum in downtown Indianapolis.
